devices but as a point of interest we think you should know about
them since we use them extensively in our testing and rating
program and have found them very useful.
Turn voltage into useful amperage
Adding a Buck/Boost converter to a wind turbine will more
than double your monthly wattage efficiency since all voltage
ranges will be converted into useful battery charging power.
I have seen some simple home built designs using a multiple
nicad battery packs instead of a capacitors and using a switching
relay instead of a transistor. The idea is to store power
for an instant in time in capacitors or small batteries and then
feed it to the big battery bank in small jolts at the optimum
voltage range.
Some of the more advanced systems use dual capacitors to
increase voltage. Two capacitors or batteries can be charged
in parallel and then discharged in series effectively doubling
the voltage. Precise timing between charging and discharging
gives the optimum voltage.
This process can also work in reveres lowering voltage and
turning it in useful amperage.
A Buck/Boost Converter is sometimes called a DC to DC
converter or a
MPPC (Maximum power point controller) or
MPPT (Maximum power point tracking)
They are relitivly simple and very effective devices!
Your cell phone has one of these built right in so it can
make full use of the available energy in your battery while delivering
steady voltage to the phone. Without one your cell phone would
only work for a short while. A DC to DC Converter makes
the most efficient use of any available power.
